Update on Business Operations in Light of Covid-19

March 20, 2020 by Lesley

We regret to inform you that per Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order 202.6 as of March 22, 2020 at 8 p.m all non-essential businesses and not-for-profit entities in New York State, have been directed to reduce the in-person workforce at each business/work location by 100% from pre-state of emergency declaration employment levels.

That means that we are no longer able to offer in-person counseling sessions at this time. We are however, still offering counseling services to our clients using a telehealth platform, providing secure phone and video conferencing. The platform we are using to provide these services is doxy.me, which is both encrypted and HIPAA compliant, as well as easy to access and use. If you are a current client and have questions about how to use doxy.me, please reach out directly to your provider.

At this time we cannot speculate about how long the governmental restrictions will be in place. We do understand that this is a particularly challenging time for everyone, and that the upcoming period of limitation and isolation is likely to be very difficult. We will certainly keep you posted on any future developments as we get them. In the meantime, please adhere to the governmental regulations to stay at home, and take good care of yourselves and your loved ones. If we can help support you in any way, please do not hesitate to reach out by phone (716) 926-6009, or you may contact us here.

Our response to Covid-19

March 16, 2020 by Lesley

To our valued clients,

The situation is rapidly changing around Covid-19 (the “Coronavirus”). There is a lot of uncertainty in our lives right now, especially with the recent closures of schools, restaurants, gyms and other social outlets and the cancellation of planned travel and events. On the world stage, we have seen countries like China and Italy being devastated by the overwhelming health needs of their populations. Nationally, we have been hearing the stories from California, Seattle and New York City. Locally, with the recent confirmation of positive cases, and the declaration of a state of emergency in Erie County, many people are wondering whether we will soon be facing something of similar magnitude to what has occurred overseas. This is an unprecedented event in most of our lifetimes, and it is understandable if you feel overwhelmed with uncertainty or unsure of what the next steps will be.

We want you to know you are not alone, and we are here to offer our support and assist you in staying calm, finding your ground, and being prepared. Your physical, mental and emotional health are our greatest focus. To help support you, we wanted to communicate the following information:

The WNY Holistic Counseling Center remains OPEN at this time and will continue to conduct in-office sessions for those who would like to come in. Please understand that this is subject to change should the authorities instruct us to close our doors, which is a likely possibility in the near future.

To ensure the safety of those of you who will be coming in to the office, as well as that of our staff, our clinicians will personally be sanitizing the office and waiting room spaces multiple times a day, sanitizing door knobs, light switches, surfaces, credit cards terminals and other communal devices, as well as couches and chairs. Additionally, we are diffusing DōTerra’s On Guard Protective Blend essential oil in our diffusers to help further purify the air. We are asking all of you to also be responsible for containing your own spread of germs to the best of your ability by complying with the following the CDC guidelines:https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/index.html.

Having said that, if you have been exposed to anyone with the virus, have been traveling AT ALL in the past few weeks, or are showing any symptoms of ANY illness including a fever, sore throat, cough, or runny nose we ask that you DO NOT come in to the office. If you are sick, please cancel your appointment and take care of yourself so you can recover quickly. If you’re just a bit under the weather, or otherwise unable to come in, but would like to keep your appointment, we are happy to continue working with you via confidential phone sessions. We are all one community and must work together to take care of ourselves and each other. We trust that you will use your best judgment.

We look forward to supporting all of you through this very challenging time. Please continue taking good care of yourself and your loved ones. We will be in touch again soon.

Best regards,
Lesley Martin and all of us at WNY Holistic Counseling

Spending Time with Friends Reduces Anxiety

April 10, 2018 by Lesley

You may have noticed there is nothing more calming or comforting than spending quality time with someone who makes you feel safe, understood and valuable. Did you know that face-to-face interaction causes a flood of hormones that counteracts the body’s defensive “fight-or-flight” response? It’s one of nature’s natural stress relievers, and as an added benefit, it also helps ward off depression and anxiety. So making it a point to connect regularly in person with family and friends is a great way to reduces stress and anxiety.

Also, it’s important to keep in mind that the people you talk to and spend time with don’t necessarily have to be able to “fix” your stress. They just simply need to listen empathically. Do your best not to let concerns about looking weak or being a burden keep you from opening up and connecting. The people who truly care about you will be honored by your trust in them and glad to offer some support. It may, in fact, really strengthen your bond.

Of course, it may not always be possible or practical to have a friend or support available to lean on when you feel anxious or overwhelmed by stress. By taking the time to build and maintain a network of close friends you can definitely improve your resiliency to life’s stressors and lower anxious feelings. So, how do you do that?

Here are some tips for building relationships:

1. That work colleague you wish you knew better? Reach out!

2. Get your volunteer game on! Helping someone else is also a great way to help yourself

3. Invite a friend for coffee or lunch

4. Set up regular check ins with a loved one

5. Join someone for a movie or a concert

6. Call, text, DM or old-school email an old friend

7. Find a workout buddy and check out new classes, plan walks, or go on adventures

8. Set up a weekly dinner date

9. Sign up to take a class or join a club to meet new people with similar interests

10. Confide in a trusted spiritual advisor, teacher, coach, or consider seeing a therapist

If you feel you could benefit from additional strategies to manage stress and lower your anxiety, we can help! Give us a call at (716) 926-6009 or click here to schedule an appointment.
